Major Taylor Iron Riders Legends

September 12, 2021 @ 06:00 - 17:00 EDT

The Montauk 125 Mile challenge Sunday, September 12th, 2021. This is a fun, fast, high spirited ride with the Major Taylor Iron Riders Cycling Club. It begins from Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and goes to the Montauk lighthouse for a total of 125 plus miles over a mostly flat course. There will be three rest stops, roughly 40 miles apart providing hydration and nutrition. This is a one way trip departing from Prospect Park with speeds averaging between 16 -20+ mph. Its important to know your average speed in order to complete this ride, especially if you are taking the bus.

2020 was a bust for events but it’s 2021 and Montauk is back, so let’s  get those wheels rolling!

There are some changes that have to happen this year in order to make this ride happen. See the bullets below. This is a long message but it’s full of valuable information so you have a safe & successful ride.

  1. Registration: Every single rider MUST register. Tiered pricing has been modified to accommodate different levels of support. This ride is insured by USA Cycling and we must adhere to their guidelines for a ride of this size and distance. If you choose NOT to register, Major Taylor Iron Riders is NOT responsible for you and MTIR is waived of any responsibility to you. Without registration, there is no access to aid stations, nutrition, hydration, SAG vehicles and any support they provide. Lastly, no post ride meal or bus ride home. We ride as one, but everyone must register to protect themselves and the riders around them. Registered riders will be identified by a wristband. Anyone without a wristband, will not receive any services, will be flagged as a non-participant and accepts responsibility for any potential incidents they are involved in. MTIR will not be responsible for these individuals.
  2. Post ride drop off locations: The usual drop off locations, Long Island and Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Slightly different location for Brooklyn. Long Island participants will have the option of storing their bikes under the bus this year. If you opt in, its suggested to bring two blankets to wrap your bike safely.
  3. The chartered bus: There will be a chartered bus for the return. The bus has limited seating so if you plan on taking the bus, sign up early. Take a look at their site for their policies and video on their cleaning procedures Academy bus for the ride home.  To ensure a level of comfort and safety for those taking the bus,  Academy has a mandatory mask requirement – vaccinated or not. The busses have been outfitted with ventilators and both emergency exits located in the roof of the bus will be open for added air circulation.  We’ve also requested the driver be vaccinated.
  4. Post Ride Meal: There will be a catered meal provided for all registered riders and any pre-registered and approved  MTIR volunteers. Bands will be issued the morning of the ride. No band. No post ride meal. No SAG. No aid stations. No fun. There will be vegetarian items too!
  5. Personal SAG Vehicles: A ride this big requires reliable SAG vehicles. The safety of the cyclists is in your hands & you make this ride possible! Personal SAG vehicles have been allowed on this ride for individuals/teams.  MTIR will continue to allow personal support under the condition they are prepared to support and will assist ANY registered cyclist in need – not just their individual/team.  The driver must register (free of charge) and attend a mandatory volunteer meeting on Tuesday, September 7th at 7:00 pm. During this call, the SAG team will meet each other and game plan for the big day. There are a few locations that we will need to talk through for the safety of the riders. SAG vehicles will be provided with a sign to place in an identifiable location on the vehicle. i.e.: back/side window. This will be helpful for cyclists to identify who you are. All drivers must share their phone numbers for communications.
    1.  Personal SAG vehicles are not permitted to ride alongside their team/individual.   This will prevent the traffic jams and the safety of the cyclists along the narrow, 2 lane roads. Any SAG vehicle  that fails to provide support for all registered participants, ride alongside their individual/team, will be banned from future Major Taylor Iron Rider Montauk rides. This ban also includes the cyclists associated with said SAG vehicle.

Important information before registering:

1) Pay $80 – full service.  SAG, aid stations, post ride meal at the Montauk Lighthouse and the chartered bus ride back to Prospect Park, with a stop at Little Neck Parkway.

2) Pay $50 –  SAG, aid stations and the post ride meal at the Montauk Lighthouse. No bus ride back. You must provide your own transportation for you and your bike.

3) Pay $40 – SAG and aid stations only. No post ride meal and no bus ride.

4) Wristbands will be issued to all paid participants the morning of the ride. No wristband. No support. No same day registrations. No exceptions.
