Hiking Fanatics Takeover

October 30, 2021

Hey guys, this week we’re doing something a lil different with a high volume hike to break up the monotony of endless cycling, with this super chill, scenic all-day 12 mile, 3 mountain pass hike. We’ll be just between Bear Mountain and Tomkins Cove, where we’ve all been before — except this time, on foot!

The full hike should be the equivalent of a very hilly ~80 mile ride, totally relegated to a Z1-Z2 pace (120-140bpm).

First we’ll be meeting at Cove Deli to get some breakfast before continuing just 5 minutes northward onto the trailhead. We’re going to be moving slow, spending some time in the quiet, peaceful wilderness, under the cover of beautiful autumnal foliage, with endless opportunities for scenic views. Not to mention, an evermore so unique experience with neither shouting over the wind at 20mph, nor tap dancing shoes, and a freakish glimpse of what you, and what you thought were all your friends as absolutely normal ass people. You might even come to realize that you want to avoid my nonstop talking just as much on foot as you do on the bike, if not more. We will also be headed to Mitsuwa Marketplace afterwards for some post-hike food, where there’ll be Japanese meal options (Ramen, tempura, onigiri, curry, etc.), groceries, baked goods, and desserts.

You should bring:
1. Comfortable, but rugged shoes, preferably of hiking variety.
2. A lightweight jacket (it’s GOOD to start the hike cold; your packable cycling windbreaker may work well for this)
3. A spare pair of socks, shoes for the car ride, and a bag for your grimy ass shoes. (Your feet will thank you later, as well as your car interior)
4. Enough water and food for a 6-8 hour hike, unfortunately there are no 9W Markets, Boxer Donuts, West Nyack Delis, or Bear Mountain vending machines on the trail.

Logistics:
1. Meet @ Cove Deli 8AM
2. Drive up to trailhead after breakfast
3. Noodle around in the woods, kick rocks n stare at the ground together
4. Stop to eat food, take in the sights, wherever and whenever
5. Optional Mitsuwa Marketplace

Route (We will be doing a lightly modified version of this so we can park for free @ Timp Torne Trailhead):
